It is the internationally recognized government’s last stronghold, and it is located in the heart of Yemen’s oil reserves. Marib’s collapse would be a watershed moment in the conflict.
Yemen has been gripped by one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises since Saudi Arabia intervened in 2015, supported by the US and UK, when the Houthis removed the government from the capital.
It’s been a bloody conflict, with both sides accusing the other of killing civilians and other atrocities.
At least 800,000 people displaced by the war have fled to Marib. More are on their way.
