Tragedy struck in Lviv, western Ukraine, when a Russian rocket hit an apartment building, resulting in the death of at least four individuals, including a 21-year-old woman and a 95-year-old woman. Another 34 people sustained injuries in what the mayor of Lviv called one of the most significant attacks on the city’s civilian infrastructure. Lviv regional head Maksym Kozytskyi reported that over 30 houses had been destroyed. The Russian military has not yet commented on the incident. President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged a strong response to the assault by “Russian terrorists.” Emergency services are working to clear debris and rescue any individuals potentially trapped under the rubble. The Ukrainian air force accused Russia of launching the missiles from the Black Sea, with Ukraine’s armed forces claiming to have shot down seven out of ten Kalibr cruise missiles. The blasts also affected protected historical buildings in Lviv, prompting Ukraine’s culture ministry to call on UNESCO to take action. Russia has been carrying out deadly missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, including civilian targets, causing widespread damage and casualties.
